Fall in Rockland — apple picks, harvest fests, and sweater weather

October in Rockland is the moment the county shows off. The hills turn, the orchards open their U-pick rows, and every town seems to have a festival on the calendar. This issue is our short list of where to spend the weekends — the spots locals keep coming back to.

The orchards worth the drive

Three picks within an hour of the bridge. All open weekends through the end of October, all with cider donuts that justify the trip on their own.

• Concklin Orchards (Pomona) — family-run since 1712, with a hayride that loops the back of the property.
• Dr. Davies Farm (Congers) — smaller crowds, pumpkins still on the vine, and the best apple cider donuts in the county.
• Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm (Yorktown Heights) — a quick hop over the river. Pick-your-own apples, a hard cider tasting room, and Christmas trees coming in November.

This weekend on the events board

• Nyack Street Fair — Sunday, 10 to 5. Forty blocks of vendors, bands on two stages, and the best people-watching of the year.
• Suffern Fall Festival — Saturday. Pony rides, pumpkin painting, and a chili cook-off that gets serious.
• Piermont Harvest Stroll — Friday night. Storefronts pour wine, bands set up on the sidewalk, and the marina lights up.

A business worth your dollar

This month's local-spotlight pick: Hudson Hearth Bakery in Nyack. Wood-fired sourdough, seasonal pastries, and a Sunday bread CSA that's worth the standing order. Maria opens at 7 a.m. on weekends and the cinnamon morning buns sell out by ten.
