Every gymnast starts somewhere. For thousands of Rockland County kids, that somewhere has been Tumble Bee Gymnastics, a Nanuet gym that has been teaching little ones to tumble, climb, and balance since August 1986. What began in Pearl River, then moved through New City, has now spent four decades turning toddlers into confident movers.

The gym's philosophy is right in its tagline: "Yes, we do teach real gymnastics!" But it starts at the very beginning. The Toddler Gym class is for ages 10 to 24 months, with a parent right there participating, in 45-minute sessions. From there, kids progress through Romp N' Roll (ages 2 to 3, also 45 minutes), Busy Bees (ages 3 to 4), and Tumble Bees (ages 4 to 5), all part of the preschool program.

For older kids, there is the FUN & FIT program -- non-competitive gymnastics for ages 5 to 12. Tumble Bee says that since 1995 it has been the only area gym teaching the nationally recognized Fun & Fit curriculum, now combined with the online Smart Moves Program. The emphasis is on fun and fitness, not on the pressure of competition.

Parents watching from the sidelines -- or rather, from the viewing windows the gym provides -- will notice the small numbers: classes run at a 6-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. Lesson plans change weekly around a theme, so sessions stay fresh for young attention spans.

The gym also throws birthday parties, and the parents who have celebrated there seem to be fans -- the gym's own homepage features birthday-party praise from happy families.

Practical details: Tumble Bee Gymnastics is at 401 Market Street in Nanuet, and can be reached at (845) 623-2553. The fall 2026 semester for its toddler, combo, and Romp N' Roll classes runs from September 10, 2026 through January 22, 2027, with join-anytime prorating, and new students can try a class for $10. The gym also maintains an active presence on Instagram at @tumblebeegymnastics, on Facebook, and on YouTube.

Forty years is a long time to do anything, let alone to run a business built on the energy of small children. In a county full of young families looking for the right first activity, Tumble Bee has quietly become one of the long-running answers -- one forward roll at a time.
