Kwan Thai: Pearl River's Nearly Two-Decade Thai Kitchen, Made to Order

On East Central Avenue in Pearl River, Kwan Thai has been doing one thing for nearly 19 years: cooking Thai food to order, one dish at a time.

The restaurant calls itself a staple of the Pearl River community and one of the premier Thai restaurants in the Hudson Valley, and its approach backs that up. Every dish is made to order by chef and owner Kwan, using fresh, hand-picked ingredients — the restaurant's menu puts it plainly — and the sauces are made in house, a complement to any dish on the table.

The room matches the food: warm, inviting, and friendly, the kind of neighborly spot Rockland Magazine once put on its cover, calling it cozy and inviting with an "I've been here before" feeling.

There is more of Rockland on the walls than the menu. Co-owner Peter Bellhouse photographed the disassembly of the old Tappan Zee Bridge and the assembly of the new one, and those photographs hang in the restaurant — a local landmark documented by a local owner.
