West Nyack's RoCA Is More Than a Gallery on the Wall

The Rockland Center for the Arts offers free exhibitions, a walkable sculpture trail, and classes that make it one of the county's most accessible creative anchors.

Most people in Rockland County have driven past the sign on Buttonhole Drive in West Nyack at least once. Fewer have actually pulled in, parked, and taken their time -- which is a missed opportunity, because the Rockland Center for the Arts, known locally as RoCA, runs deeper than a single afternoon visit might suggest.

The gallery itself rotates exhibitions regularly, so returning visitors rarely see the same show twice. Admission is free, which removes the mental calculation that often keeps people from stopping into a cultural spot on a whim. Walk in on a Tuesday, walk out having seen something genuinely new -- that's the pitch, and it holds up.

What surprises first-timers is the outdoor sculpture trail. West Nyack is not a neighborhood you'd typically associate with public art installations, but the trail changes that assumption quickly. It's the kind of thing that works for a solo walk or a slow lap with kids who need to move around while still absorbing something.

Speaking of kids: RoCA runs classes for both children and adults, making it one of the few spots in the county where a parent can enroll a ten-year-old in a Saturday workshop and sign themselves up for something on a weeknight without driving to two different towns. That's a practical convenience worth noting for families in West Nyack, Nanuet, or anywhere in the surrounding area.

The event calendar rounds things out. RoCA isn't operating on a single-track gallery model -- it's hosting programming that changes with the season, which means there's usually a reason to check in even if you visited recently.

For anyone still treating RoCA as a landmark they mean to visit someday, the free admission makes the calculus simple. See the full listing for current exhibition details and what's coming up on the event calendar.
