Lake Sebago Beach Is Harriman's Quieter Answer to a Crowded Summer

Tucked along Seven Lakes Drive in Harriman State Park, this sandy beach on the park's largest lake draws swimmers who'd rather skip the Lake Welch rush.

On a Saturday in July, Lake Welch fills up fast — parking lots back up, the sand gets claimed early, and the whole operation starts to feel less like a day at the lake and more like a logistics exercise. Lake Sebago Beach, sitting at 488 Seven Lakes Drive near Tomkins Cove, tends to run a different pace.

Lake Sebago is the largest lake inside Harriman State Park, which gives it a certain geographic weight, but the beach itself has stayed under the radar compared to its more prominent neighbor. Lifeguards are on duty in season, there's a snack bar for when the afternoon hunger hits, and the facilities include bathhouses and picnic tables — the basics, handled without fuss. The beach also has fishing access and rowboat rentals, which opens up the afternoon into something more than just a swim.

This is the kind of spot that works for families with young kids who need the structure of a staffed beach, but also for anyone who just wants to spread out a little. The rowboats in particular make it a natural fit for a slower, older-crowd kind of outing — a couple of hours on the water without much agenda.

Parking is on-site, which matters more than it sounds on peak summer days in Harriman. The beach operates on a paid, seasonal basis, so it's worth checking ahead before making the drive from anywhere in the county. From the Tomkins Cove and Stony Point end of Rockland, it's an easy shot; from Nanuet or Pearl River, you're looking at a straightforward run up Route 45 or through the park roads.

If your summer routine has defaulted to the same few spots, Lake Sebago is worth an afternoon detour. The full listing has details and directions.
