A coffee shop is a natural place to read a book. At Bunbury’s in Piermont, it is also an address where you can bring a book idea.
Located within the café at 460 Piermont Avenue is Bunbury’s Books, a publishing business established in 2020. Its website identifies Debra L. Pirsos as publisher and traces the venture to a wish to publish a children’s book. The work has since expanded into other genres.
The starting point is a consultation: author and publisher discuss the concept, take stock of how far along the project is, and review the publishing process and available packages. That is a different kind of offering from a shelf of books beside the coffee counter. It gives the unfinished idea a next step.
Bunbury’s everyday café identity has its own particulars. The shop says it bakes from scratch daily, with muffins, scones, buns, pies, cakes and cookies in its repertoire. Coffee comes from Coffee Labs Roasters in Tarrytown. Tea gets more than a passing mention, too: the shop lists over twenty loose-leaf varieties, offered hot, iced or by the ounce to take home.
Those details make the publishing connection feel especially fitting. Making something to share—a baked good or a book—is a useful way to think about the two businesses under one roof. Their products are very different; both begin well before the moment someone picks one up.
There is an older trace of Bunbury’s connection to local creativity. In June 2013, Nyack News & Views included it among the participating businesses in its announcement of Piermont’s first Art Walk. Long before the publishing venture began, the shop was already appearing in the village’s creative calendar.
For a reader, the attraction might be a cup of tea. For an aspiring author, it might be a conversation about a manuscript. Bunbury’s makes an appealing case for a neighborhood coffee shop as both an everyday stop and a starting point for something longer.
