The process

Behind the work.

A song can introduce you to someone you might otherwise pass without a word. Hear how it was written, and the person behind it becomes a little less of a stranger. That possibility sits at the heart of the writers rounds Billy Goldman is organizing in Rockland County.

In our conversation, Billy describes a local scene rich in songwriters and musicians, with fewer opportunities than he would like for their work to be heard. Through BillyCollabs, he is making room for them to share a stage. Writers sit together, take turns playing original songs, and talk about the experiences behind the music. Listening is part of the evening, not something left to chance.

The Nashville connection is a performance format. At the Bluebird Cafe, a typical In The Round show places three or four writers in the center of the room, sharing songs and the stories behind them. Billy describes bringing that spirit of close listening to local artists. His rounds feature original music and welcome attention to talent from Rockland and nearby communities, including Bergen County.

There is something valuable in that scale. A listener can arrive without knowing a single name on the bill and leave with a song to remember and a person to look up. A writer can offer the context that a recording alone might never carry: where an idea began, what a line means, why a particular story needed a song. Those are small openings for a community to get to know its own artists.

For RocklandConnected, that is what makes this work worth spotlighting. Supporting local music begins with giving it our attention. Showing up, listening closely, and remembering the people behind the songs can turn an unfamiliar local scene into one we feel part of.

Watch our interview with Billy below to hear him explain the rounds in his own words. This feature introduces the idea; it is not an announcement of a specific event or lineup.
