About Letchworth Village
Letchworth Village is a historic 2,000-acre site in Thiells, New York, originally opened in 1911 as a utopian "village" experiment serving as a state developmental center. The institution closed in 1996, and much of the property is now public parkland featuring paved walking paths and ballfields. Visitors can view the abandoned buildings from the trails, though entry into the structures is not permitted. The site is free to visit year-round, is dog-friendly, and is featured on the Rockland Heritage Trail as a significant local landmark with a complicated history.
